Problems with Nikon D800 & 24-70mm 2.8 lens
8 months ago

Over the past year, I have been upgrading gear including buying the Nikon D800 and 70-200 2.8 lens, which is a great combination. I have the 17-55 2.8 which is a beautiful lens, but I needed a medium zoom FX lens for my D800. I chose the 24-70mm. I could be wrong, but it looks like a terrible lens! After shooting for a few days, and finally doing a focus test with a ruler, and the camera on a tripod, it would seem that the lens is tack sharp when auto-focus is used in the middle of the frame, at f/4 or f/5.6, but if one shifts the focus point to the edges of the frame, the sharpness is lousy. I can provide some test frames if that would help. I know this lens has gotten great reviews. Am I doing something wrong? All my other lenses work very very well with the Nikon D800. I LOVE the camera, and have had no need to use the autofocus fine-tune. Can anyone help? I paid $1800. for the lens, and am freaking out that it looks this bad at wide apertures. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
