Do PDAF sites affect image resolution?

There seems to be very little data about how PDAF sites work. Do they also register light but only in one channel or do they only work for AF and don't register light at all?

With the A6000 having 197 or so PDAF sites that is probably about 172,000 pixels and that is quite a lot. The Canon 70D has it so all pixels are dual and can work as PDAF pixels but also combine to form an imaging pixel.

Surely that must impact on IQ even if you use interpolation of nearest neighbour pixels to fill in the missing pixels.

Anyone know or have a link to an explanation of how these PDAF sites work?
