Should I buy an extension tube?
Feb 17, 2014

I have an Olympus E-PL5 with 14-42mm and 45mm lenses (Which I bought after long disscusions in this forum, and really happy for this purchase). I enjoy this equipment very much, but one thing I miss is the ability to shoot macro. I can't afford a dedicated macro lens right now, so I thought there's not much I can do about it for now. Browsing the web I came across these extension tubes. They seem great - quite cheap (about 40$ at ebay for an automatic one), and the IQ should be good because as far as I understand it depends on the lens. What do you say? Are there any cons I should consider?

I consider only an automatic one, I don't think a manual tube will work for me.

So I have two questions:

- Are extension tubes a good enough substitue for a macro lens?

- Is there a specific extension tube you would reccomend me to buy?

Thank you very much.
