Gitzo Series 1 Traveler -- Enough stability for the price?

After much online reading, I'm considering a Gitzo 1542T to use while traveling, principally because of the light weight and short length when folded. I really don't want to carry more than 3 - 3.5 lbs (legs + ball head) and < 18" seems like a great size for flexibility in packing. I have a DX body (D7100) and the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 is the heaviest lens I own. So is it crazy to spend $800-900 (legs + ball head) for a tripod that will still be somewhat top heavy? I understand that tripods are all about trade-offs, weight vs height vs. stability vs. cost, etc., but I'm looking for input as to whether this sort of travel tripod is likely to be a stable enough platform (since that's the main point of lugging a tripod around).
