As you know, the 7D does like to produce noisy skies.

This is an often made statement, and I wondered how if it really is a property of the camera, or is it the RAW converter. So, I took a shot, converted it in DPP - no noise reduction, no sharpening and did the same in Lightroom. Then I applied 150 sharpening to the Lightroom shot, I also used DPP to convert to a 16 bit TIFF and loaded into Lightroom and applied 150 sharpening to it. Here are the results.

Converted in Canon DPP - no noise reduction or sharpening

Converted in Lightroom - no noise reduction or sharpening

Converted to 16 bit TIFF in Canon DPP - no noise reduction - 150 sharpening applied in Lightroom

Converted in Lightroom - no noise reduction - 150 sharpening applied in Lightroom

To my eye the sharpened Lightroom conversion has much more sharpening noise/artifacts, than the sharpened DPP conversion.
