I did a head to head comparison with my supersharp 20mm f/1.7 lens. In a side-by-side comparison with all sharpening turned off I can see a slight difference (the 20mm being sharper) but for all practical purposes the 12-40 is the lens to use unless I really need faster than f/2.8.

I would agree with the other poster suggesting that you start by doing the "upside down test" to see whether the lens is equally sharp (or soft) in all corners, so as to rule out a decentering problem.
