Manfrotto QR plate question

I have several manfrotto tripods/monopods with the small rectangular quick release plates for attaching to my Nikons. I notice that the newer versions require attaching to the camera in a particular way ie they are stamped with a camera/lens direction arrow underneath, whereas with some of the older slightly larger plates it doesn't seem to matter which way the plate is rotated. Both versions seem to fit OK so I was wondering why the difference?  - it's just a bit of a pain to attach the newer plate in a hurry especially for those of us with aging eyes. I can't seem to find the old version for sale.

I'm prompted to enquire after almost dropping my D800 after trying to attach to tripod with the plate facing the wrong way!
