I would definitely go with the 23 because you can use it for just about anything instead of the 14 which is too wide mostly for portraits. 14 would definitely make sense as a second or third lense or maybe you could get the 27 and 14 to start off with.

Well, I have the 35 and 60 for portraits and the 56 is pre-ordered.

The ability to 'see' the shot is more important than the gear used to capture it.

Jim,

Here's another possible option for you that no one has mentioned yet. Depending on how much of a rush you're in to buy a lens and let's face it, they'll be on sale several more times this year alone, there's the rumored, and on the new road map, probable 16 f1.4. Not quite as wide as the 14 but (if it does come to fruition) as fast as the 23. May be the perfect lens to cover what you're looking for.

I have an X100S along with my X-E2 and if the 16 f1.4 becomes reality that's the lens I will get as I find the 14 just too wide for my liking And have 23 covered with the 100S.

Sounds interesting but my guess is that it will be somewhat of a beast of a lens if it is that fast.  I'll search the rumor sites for a bit more on it.. thanks.
