Yes, would be really nice if the G1x2 had an 'over-sized' multi-aspect ratio sensor like the LX7, but I'd be quite surprised if that's the case.

Can you otherwise explain why Canon has made the lens coverage very slightly smaller if not to add a multi-aspect-ratio feature?

Many people complained about the 4:3 aspect ratio of the G1 X,

Really ? for me this is the MAIN reason why I may buy this Canon

and recently the trend has been towards 3:2 (Sony RX100, Ricoh GR, etc.), so I think the various signs all point towards at least adding a 3:2 aspect ratio.

I think you are mixing things here. All APS cameras ( incuding the Ricoh GR) have a NATIVE 3;2 ratio

what is infuriating though in cameras without OVF is the trend towards 3;2 ratio ONLY (sony RXs, sony AR, sigma DP)

I think for cameras with EVF or LCD only there is NO VALID reason  NOT to offer several different ratios( at least 4;3 , 3;2 and 1;1 )

Most significantly, the lens specs only make sense if the aspect ratio is 3:2 (to make a 24-120 mm-e) on a sensor the same width as the G1 X sensor. But with that lens there would suddenly be unused sensor area above and below the image, which Canon could use “for free” by adding a variable aspect ratio.

All compact cameras should support multiple aspect ratios using the full lens coverage. This feature gets maximum image quality for a given package size.
