Can you otherwise explain why Canon has made the lens coverage very slightly smaller if not to add a multi-aspect-ratio feature?

It helps keeping the size down with the faster lens.

True (I was kind of hoping you wouldn’t mention that!).

But wouldn’t it be easier just to make the lens very slightly slower then, e.g. f/2.1-4.0? Maybe that would introduce its own marketing problems. Maybe f/2 is a ‘magic’ number, highly desirable for marketing purposes.

I still think the fact Canon uses its own sensors in these cameras, and the other factors and the competitive landscape, make it likely this camera has 3:2 and 4:3 aspect ratios using the full lens coverage. (Square ratios with full lens coverage wouldn’t be present unless Canon made a new, larger sensor – which I think unlikely.)

Right, with a 1.92x crop factor the sensor height should be app. 16mm in order to support 1:1, and Canon's APS-C sensor is just app. 15mm. They could use a 24mp Sony APS-C sensor (1.5x crop), but that's probably not likely to happen!
