SAL35F18 on SLT-A37 gives soft photos !?

Two days ago I received my SAL35F18. I expected needle sharp shots compared to my SAL1855 KIT lens. High expectations? Not really, because my SAL85F28 gave me exactly that last year. But my 35mm pictures seem very "soft". I don't now what to think. Perhaps the conditions were not right (I went out in the snow to test my new lens), or perhaps I use too big appertures (1,8-2,8) for too far distances (10-15 feet froms the subjects)? Could it be the lens is not right callibrated? I have no example picture at hand, but can add one later today. Please let me know your experiences with the SAL35F18!
