Lightroom: one or two things do you really wish you had known at the outset?

A few of you may have seen my recent post about my initial struggles with setting up Lightroom 4. It seems a lot of future success rides on how you initially set things up, a task performed at the point of greatest ignorance about the product. I would like to learn from those who may have "learned the hard way," and who fervently wish they had know one or two particular things from day one. Would appreciate your thoughts on "whatever you do, don't do this...."

BTW, should I survive Lightroom 4, I will probably purchase the upgrade to 5, so don't hesitate to include comments about 5 as well.

It has been ages since I posted here, so thank you in advance for helping me ease back in.
