English country gardens. K5IIS +?

My wife and I will be going on a tour of English country gardens. I presently have a K5IIS with 18-135mm lens. Although a handy, general purpose lens, it is not sharp outside the center zone. I like my images to be sharp! With expected shots of flower beds was well as individual blooms, I feel that the fairly restricted zoom range of the 20-40mm lens would not be a problem and would suffice. I travel with one lens only and always a mid range zoom (absolutely hate changing lenses). Any thoughts on my plan. Please do not recommend primes. I gave up on them many years ago and ,yes, I realize that primes will provide the very sharpest images. Having shot with some quality mid range zooms (Nikon 24-120 f/4 for example) a really good quality zoom satisfies me.
