Soft Images w D800E

Shot some pictures of my son this morning using 50mm 1.8. Frames were taken indoors under lower light across a dinner table 3 1/2 feet away. All were at 1.8, shutter speed ranged from 50 to 125 and ISO was at 800. Shots seemed in focus but when zoomed in on the back of the camera the eyes were just a bit soft. Focus was targeted on the eyes. Should my shutter speed be much higher, therefore raising my ISO much higher? Somewhat frustrated. Feeling like I may have bought the wrong camera. Brought the camera to a local shop, showed them the frames and they felt I must have had a bad copy of the lens. Should have been in focus when zoomed in. Help!
