D800E + Zeiss Otus 55mm F/1.4 & Aperture Priority
Feb 9, 2014

I was thinking of purchasing this lens for the D800E, and I had a few questions. I understand this is a manual lens with its own aperture ring, in which I would have to set a fixed aperture in camera, in order for the lens to operate properly and to be able to adjust the aperture ring from the lens.

I feel silly asking this, but would this render aperture priority mode, useless? By investing in this manual lens would I be giving up all light metering/auto exposure abilities of the camera?

My gut tells me, because you set the aperture in-camera to something like F16, while the lens is connected, the camera will always think it's at f/16, even when you adjust it from the lenses aperture ring, hence giving skewed faulty metering of some kind. But I'm hoping that's incorrect.
