I don't think they are a sub-contractor as their processes will be quite different to Sony's and so Sony would have to heavily modify the design of a sensor to suit them, which is very unlikely.

Also Sony's unlikely to want a competitor to have quite that much access to their technology, plus why give away a slice of the pie rather than make it yourself and make more money? It's not like Panasonic is even the end user.

As to PDAF Panasonic is betting on their defocus technique as being a better way of achieving that, and something they can use all the pixels on the sensor for.
