I'm completely new to candid street photography and I think this is a worthwhile shot. Am I on the right track? [Fujifilm s8000fd, but just acquired a more suitable Lumix LX7]

Welcome and thank you for posting. It is a street group portrait taken with a telephoto lens with a narrow field of view. I believe that this photograph would be better if it was framed differently or taken with a shorter lens in order to show the hand of the child and some of the environment. With such tight framing you made a choice between the pony tail and the child's hand. The hand of the child is of a greater importance than the pony tail for telling the story. By cutting the boys hand you cut the story short.
The viewer cannot be sure what the story is. The boy could be waving somebody goodbye, holding a red flag or pointing to a performing hula dancer.
