How to reduce minimum focusing distance (MFD) while maintaining portability?
Feb 7, 2014

Hello everyone!

I'm currently using my NEX-5T w/ the SEL20F28, and while i'm happy with the focal length, and will eventually upgrade to the SEL24F18Z, I'm looking for a way to reduce the MFD minimum focusing distance for this lens.

Currently, because the lens is so wide and doesn't focus close, I need to back away from the things I shoot and I end up cropping anyways. I'm looking for ways to get closer without switching to a macro lens or spending $700+ for the SEL24F18Z for now.

Are there things I can add on to reduce focusing distances? I've heard of extension tubes and close up filters, but I'm not sure how they work, so I haven't bought yet. There were posts saying how some extension tubes may harm the contacts on the camera body, so I'd prefer the close up filters if possible.

If anyone can chime in with their experiences, it would he helpful. Thank You!!
