How do I focus in very low light

Naive question. I have a situation with relatively little light. Exposure is seconds at ISO400 and maximum aperture. Subject is also relatively low-contrast. The camera's AF system is lost. I can't see enough through the viewfinder to really focus manually. Focus zoom with electronic viewfinder doesn't help; it's all noise.

Is there any sensible way to focus? I have lots of time, but not enough time to rotate the focus 1 degree, shoot, and repeat for the whole focus range.
