To trigger an off-camera flash with the built in unit without the latter contributing to the shot you need to select the following:

Flash control > Built-In-flash settings > Wireless func. > select the middle option with the diagram of only a flash gun.

The settings available are, from the top down:

  • Disable (no wireless control)
  • Built-in + external in a predefined ratio
  • External only
  • Built-in + external at the same settings

I agree, the icons are less than obvious at first.

I personally found a better solution in the Yongnuou YN-622c. It's cheap, (a pair will cost you ~$85) full-featured (including HSS, TTL and remote flash control) while also not being restricted by line-of-sight. (radio signal vs optical system)
