The 24-120mm is not terrific in the 24-50mm focal ranges but would otherwise be what I would recommend. I have the 28-300mm and other than being slow at f5.6 (for all zoom focal lengths past 100mm) it is a remarkably good lens considering the 10x zoom factor. I use it for travel when I need to travel light and take it along with the 18-35mm f3.5G lens.

A lens that has been announced but is not yet shipping is a new 24-105mm f4 OS lens from Sigma. I have found Sigma zoom lenses to be exceptional and this more conservative zoom range is likely to provide better optical quality. This is certainly true with the exceptional Canon 24-105mm f4 IS lens which is one of the best zooms that Canon has produced.
