I know about this, but I want to move in a different direction. Im going through these portfolios and each is the same with picture upon picture filled with the same catch-light time and time again. I am looking to create a different image.

So what is your method to avoid the "catch light" or other tell tale signs of flash usage?

You don't avoid the catchlight. You embrace it. You love it. You need it. You want it.

Without a catchlight, eyes look dead, lifeless. Read any book on portrait photography and you will learn this is so. Unanimously. Good luck to you.

If you want to move in a different direction than others and go against the crowd, then why do you ask the crowd for directions?

Make a positive statement and show us how you want a portrait to look. Go your own way.
