Advice on 400/2.8

A few years ago I took the plunge and invested in a Nikkor 200 f/2.0. I have really enjoyed using this lens for sports and it is my favorite portrait lens. I am thinking this year I'd like to add the big brother, the 400/2.8. As much as I would like a new VR, the $9k+ investment is hard to justify with the amount of sports I shoot, though I would use it for other things as well. Considering the AFS-II (2001-2008) or AFS (1998-2001) versions, how much could I expect to save and what would I be giving up besides VR? Is there anything else I should consider, like servicability? I assume Nikon stilll services all these models. I saw some on KEH and Adorama going in the $5k range. Those look to be first AFS version, but it's not real clear. What are the going rates? Any sort of advice on what to consider or what to discount would be appreciated.
