I'm waiting to thrown my ten-grand on either (1) a Nikkor upgrade to the 7-yr old 500mm (not counting on it anytime soon) or (2) a Sigma "global-vision" 500mm or 600mm.

I had to do a double-take when I saw the (un)sharpness scores of the current crop of Nikon lenses (both in the teens), which all-but-guarantees last-generation pre-D800/high MP body performance that, unsurprisingly, the beggars-can't-be-choosers are cry-themselves-to-sleep happy with.

When I went back-packing, canned beans started to taste good by the third day and boiled pine-needles on the fifth, and in the Sahara, Survivorman drank his own pi$$.
