Film like?

I often see X Trans cameras described as producing images that are "film like."

What does this actually mean - is it a euphemism for "soft."

I've looked through hundreds of XE1, XPro and X100s pics on Flickr and those that haven't been stripped of colour (disproportionate amount of B&W from the X100s) all appear to be slightly out of focus. But when I examine them in more detail I'm not sure they're out of focus, but just kind of "soft." I can't really put my finger on it but they just seem to lack fine detail. Foliage, in particular, is particularly fuzzy and text is never sharp.
