Function. Disagree? Tell me, why have all SLRs had the OVF in the top center? You will say bc of the optical path, but they could have put it on the bottom center. holding the camera up high, even with the forehead, dumb huh? There are innate advantages to the design. Keeping the lens lined with the eye is a performance benefit. Not mandatory, but better for action.

So where are they supposed to put the EVF ? On the bottom? In the center where the LCD is? Human comfort is the driving force, which means an EVF will go somewhere along the top line. So they can either keep profiles smaller and go for rangefinder, or center it for an aligned design lending to user performance. There is only two options. So before you EVF haters burst a capillary, understand nobody copies anybody. An SLR has a center VF for the same reasons a mirror less would.
