Tamron lens focuses closer than minimum distance, faulty?

Hey all,

This is my first post, would really appreciate some advice

i just bought a tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 XR VC Di II LD for my canon 600d. The strangest thing though, it can focus at very low distances, it is supposed to have a minimum focus distance of 29cm, but it is more like 10cm. also the autofocus does work correctly but sometimes the distance written on the lens is longer than the distance to the subject.

now i don't know if this is a problem or not, clearly the lens is not working as advertised but is it a bad thing? also what could cause this?
it takes fine pictures, and the autofocus seems to work correctly. just worried it would cause problems down the line.
many thanks for any advice you could give
