you need a calibrated monitor for b&w too!

Your monitor has to be calibrated for b&w too! And able to reproduce a large enough dynamic range! Otherwise how will you get your shadows, highlights and gradients right? And surely you don't want your black and white photos to have a greenish tint when you view them on your screen?

There are no shortcuts!
