Using flash for landscapes

So i was reading this article

http://strobist.blogspot.com/2008/01/using-speedlights-with-landscapes.html

and i was wondering if the pictures we taken with the flash on camera (which i dont think, because then the area close to the camera would also be lit)

I was thinking about doing the same thing, but i only have one flash. I was thinking that i could take the photo on a 30sec exposure at f11 hypothetically. With the flash in my hands, i could set the flash to its max power (1/1) and run over to the thing i want to light paint, and paint it with the test fire button on the flash. The problem is that im wondering if i would be visible when i run through the frame. If i run, would there be a big blur of where i ran? since its dark, i dont think it would catch me, what do you guys think?

Like with this photo, the person running around the couple with sparklers isnt seen, but they are in a relatively bright area
