Actually, given that most modern backlights for small LED's no longer employ EL technology and, rather, use LEDs - the start up should be near instantaneous.
My guess is that some programmer somewhere forgot to put in that additional line of code. Hopefully, if this is in fact the case and that Olympus is even aware of it, there might be some firmware fix. Even if not, like I said, it's not a major hit.
