I don't think I'd call it a workaround. If you want auto switching to be responsive, you have to leave the LCD powered at some level so that it is instant-on. Going to manual switching is perfectly reasonable as a way yo operate the camera that uses less power.

The A7 works similarly, but you have to go menu diving to get to the options that control which display is active.
