Upgrading from D700: D800 or D610

Dear all,

I own a D700 since 2008, and I love it. I am considering an upgrade before value of D700 diminishes, so I like to stay up to date with the current technology. Yes, I plan to sell my D700 to partially pay the new purchase.

So before I pose my questions, I have to give you some information:

  • I am not a pro,
  • I do not take photos frequently (20000 clicks on D700 in 5 years),
  • I almost never use on-camera flash, other than utilizing it as a commander,
  • When I am indoors, I either use the available light, or use a speedlight remotely,
  • I almost exclusively use spot metering with manual compensation when needed,
  • I almost exclusively select the focus point manually in AF-S mode,
  • I shoot (in decreasing order): kids, family photos, architecture, and rarely nature and macro on a tripod
  • Lenses I have (in decreasing order of use): 85/1.4D, 50/1.4D, 14-24/2.8G, Sigma 150/2.8 EX Macro, 180/2.8D
  • I exclusively shoot in RAW format,
  • I have sufficient CPU and storage resources (even for D800/D610),
  • I archive most of the photos, and print some "prime" choices myself with a Photo Stylus 1400 printer to hang in a frame w/o any glass on semi-matte high quality paper, at most in A3 (approx 12x17)
  • I am curious about video capabilities
  • Money is an issue but not an obstacle.

Here is the questions for which I like to get your opinions/suggestions:

  • Is it silly to try to be up to date with the current technology when you are happy with the one in your hand?
  • If not, which way should I go: D800 or D610?
  • Will D610 be felt any "less-rigid" after handling a D700 (and before that F90x)?
  • Are the video capabilities equivalent on these new cameras?
  • Will there any handling/control issues on D610 after being used to a D700?

In short what do you suggest:

  • Stay with D700
  • D800
  • D610

Thank you in advance!
