Hi Mark,

Another possible explanation: the teleconverter is visually identical to the model developed under Hoya, which would have had SMC coatings and the corresponding designation. This photo could be of that (unreleased) version of the TC.

If they were close enough to release at that point to have prototypes, then they may have already completed the product photography as well and postponed the product right before launch in order to redesign for the new coatings. It may then have been quicker and or cheaper to photoshop the two letters in there than to completely re-do the product shoot.
