Back button focus is all that Scott Kelby uses.

I switched over after reading his recommendation, and I use it for everything, including landscapes.  These days I shoot mostly portraits, and either I or the model is constantly shifting around.  Instead of constantly refocusing for every shot, once you hit focus with AF-ON, you release the button and then fire away.  Every shot is nailed, and you can put your mind on composition and expression.

It's great.  It's all I ever use any more.
