I have A2 prints from 4 MP processed pictures, after enlarging them so they wound print at 300 dpi. Generally they had to be increased in contrast, which then needed noise reduction to compensate. Only about 10 % of my 4 MP originals (Olympus C-750UZ) gave tolerably viewable prints.

Conversely, we have similarly sized prints done at 150 dpi from 12 MP Nikon D700 originals, which I cannot fault when looking at them with a magnifier.

You really need to find out what the limit is, both of your gear and your expectations.

My guide is - if my 16 MP original falls apart at 200 % viewing, A3 is probably the maximum print size that is not painful to look at.
