It does seem a little less painful to stick to wide up to short telephoto when buying for full frame. I'd start with the much cheaper zoom that ends at 400mm and f5.6. unless you really want to go for it. Then I might try to get a used 500 f4 rather than the 200-400 f4 zoom.

A couple guys in my camera club just upgraded their old Nikons, one to the 7100 and one to the D610. Both have been taking a lot of eagle shots, and both are getting great results, though the 610 have added richness and detail.
