How can you shoot a photo?

In another thread, someone took exception to the word shoot as applied in photography. Is my understanding correct as to the evolution of the word?

My understanding is that the word originated from the act of abruptly pointing the camera at something and pressing the shutter. The resulting photo was called a snapshot because of the similarity to pointing a gun and shooting it. The snap part coming from doing it quickly.

So if there was such a thing as a snapshot, then you got it by taking a shot and if you were going to take a shot at something with the camera you were going to shoot.

It is interesting that a photo shoot can be considered a serious photographic endeavor, and it is acceptable to shoot a photo, but it less acceptable to shoot a snapshot if you are a "photographer". I guess maybe the distinction is whether or not you take care to shoot properly.
