Why are Canons so expensive?

Just wondering. Does Canon have something that Nikon and Sony dont? Out of all the brands, Canon is no question the most expensive with often less features and older guts inside. I know they are regarded as a top 2 brand in the world (some say #1 for lens hands down), but why does Canon charge the premium? Is Canon the Apple of cameras?

I was talking with a friend (who is a Pro photographer and only uses Canons) and swears Canon has bar none the best lenses in the world and are the #1 camera manufacturer in the world ahead of Nikon. He says Nikon is #2 but still playing catch up, with Canon still having about 55% of the camera market and Nikon around 35%. He said just look at most of the pro photographers, most use Canon for a reason.
