70-200mm L - Why does the f/4 have a barrel hood while f/2.8 has a petal hood?

Just out of curiosity, is there a practical reason for why the f/4 versions sport a barrel-shaped hood while the f/2.8 versions have a petal-shaped one? I don't really care about the look or anything, I am purely wondering out of curiosity.
