A meta critique on DPR's A7 review and us being defensive
6 months ago

So many people being unhappy about the A7 review on DPR.
But why do so many of us feel unhappy or even offended by criticism of the A7 - a camera that we largely adore?
A negative review isn't necessarily a bad thing. It points to things that may be improved in a future fw update or mkII version of camera hardware. Who can seriously be against iprovement and technological evolution?

We criticize the reviewer for pointing to banding issues in low-light jpeg and compressed raw images from the A7. We are unhappy about the reviewer complaining about AF speed, overall respnsiveness, battery life etc.
But: who of us wouldn't be happy about (fw or hw) updates improving AF speed, fps, true lossless RAW format, entire elimination of banding or artefact issues in jpegs? Who would seriously mind a higher battery capacity? Who of us would in their right mind raise their hand and shout: "Sony, please do NOT improve on these things because we love them!"

Please think about that. We all adore great camera gear (that's why we are here) that provides us with the best possible experience of taking great pictures.
It is thetefore in our utmost interest that companies like Sony don't stop to improve on their camera technology.

There is always something to be improved, and the camera makers do need the feedback and pressure from the user base and crtitical media (and competition) in order to facilitate the technological evolution of their cameras.
That's why I believe it is foolish to complain about a review pointing to things that may be improved.

That being said, the "score" and "award" section of the review reflect the subjective opinion and individual prefetences of the reviewer, and should thus be taken with a large grain of salt. Many of us (me included) may feel that a silver award and a score of merely 80% is not reflecting the innovation and quality of this camera. This is indeed a point where we might agree to disagree with the reviewer, but for anything else - including but not limited to his thorough analysis of potential banding issues - the reviewer deserves my respect.

Best
