The DA*60-250 would be too heavy and too short for my purposes.

The DA* 60-250mm is sharper cropped to 300mm than the DA 55-300mm.  I don't think you have a lot of options if you want WR, just get the WR 55-300 or the DA* 60-250mm.

I wouldn't canoe with an SLR either, unless it was in a pelican case.  Remember WR is not rated for submersion at all.
