Do you use and recommend UV filters?

Ok, we've got some expensive glass, so put a UV filter in front of it. If there's damage to the front glass it's replaceable with another inexpensive filter. Hmm... Got thousand dollar glass and put a $100 glass in front of it adding another glass/air interface. That doesn't seem right. Cameras are so good these days that the lens performance is a big issue and filters don't help that cause.

I've always been in the UV filter camp. Decades ago my Dad's advice was always put on a UV filter to protect the lens. While it might have made sense somewhat with film, there seems to be less reason for it today.

I always use a lens hood, regardless indoors or out; it's there. So I'm just about ready to chuck the filters in their plastic cases to save for when I'm headed for a dust storm. What's your verdict on UV filters? Maybe the degradation isn't noticeable, then it's just a cost issue.
