Diopter Adjustment

According to Nikon, the D5200 diopter should adjust from -1.7 to +0.7. According to my optometrist, I should use the -1.5 setting for optimal viewing. Unfortunately the diopter does not appear to adjust to anywhere near the desired -1.5 let alone the specified -1.7. All adjustments appear to start around 0 and adjust towards the positive scale. If I wear my glasses, the minimal adjustment is very clear. Is my diopter working properly? If it is, should I get the Nikon DK-20C Diopter -2.0 and use the built in diopter to adjust down .5?  Would that even work?  Is there actually a -1.5 diopter?  I could not find one.  Am I doing this right?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
