Issues/problems with reinstalling printer drivers

I recently had problems with my Canon Pixma iP6000D printer on my iMac (late 2007 - 1st generation aluminum model).  For some reason that I don't recall, I uninstalled the printer from the iMac.  Subsequently downloaded the drivers from Canon.  However, when I try to add the printer in via the System Preferences - Printer menu, the system seems to just stall in the mode "Configuring The Device" and doesn't go further.  The printer isn't giving any error codes, and, after cleaning heads this afternoon, print test seems okay.  I'm using OS X 10.8.5.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be preventing the reinstallation of drivers and this printer?

Thank you.
