Why do people recommend Formatting your memory card in-camera?

Hi to fellow photographers.

I have heard it recommended many times to format your memory card in your camera, and I have gone as far to recommend it to others, but then it occurred to me that I have no idea of the benefits of doing this...LOL!

Does it reduce the possibility of photos getting corrupted? When a photo is corrupted, does it just mean that the 'code' writing of the photo was written incorrectly, and the computer cannot read it?

I am so impressed with the knowledge and support of photographers in this forum. I have learned almost everything I know by reading articles here. Thanks!

When I format my memory card in my camera, is all information deleted? Or is it still possible to use a photo recovery program to rescue the photos, and restore them, after the memoery card has been formatted?
