If it was the way I am holding the camera, it would be worse at lower speeds. Instead, the effect disappeared at lower shutter speeds (1/13-1/30). Plus the pattern would be more random, not the very consistent pattern shown.

There comes a certain point where some people won't see reason. i've clearly shown SS to be a problem on the two I sampled with pretty solid evidence. they then fall to blaming my 'lack of solid method' for the results.

although I did falsely attribute some vertical shake to SS myself too

I experienced shutter shock for the first time yesterday with a cheap adapted Canon FD lens, an old JC Penney 135mm f/2.8.  I could see double images on almost everything that looked good with focus magnification beforehand.  Could I have done things differently?  Well, yes, I was supporting everything handheld mostly by holding the lens.  Didn't try again though, since the lens had enough purple fringing to make it a parts lens.  Shutter speed was on the high side, between 1/200 and 1/800.

It ain't easy being me, but someone's gotta do it.
