If this was me, the four lenses I'd consider are the Tamron 24-70mm VR stabilized lens, the Sigma 24-105 stabilized f4 lens, or the new Canon or Sigma 35mm lenses.

BIG CONCERN: with a 35mm lens, you get lots more in the photo than with a 50mm lens, but you do not make the picture look weird.

With a 28mm lens, weirdness is arriving, and with a 24mm lens, weirdness has arrived.

So if you like, for instance, kids with huge heads and tiny feet, 24mm is great.

If what you want is six normal looking people in a shot instead of four, 35mm is the choice.

And the zooms above give you both.
