As for rangefinder baselength, the Zeiss Ikon, designed by Zeiss and manufactured by Cosina, has a longer baselength and larger viewfinder than any Leica, making it more accurate and easy to focus than a Leica of equivalent viewfinder magnification. I know this because I own an Ikon, a M9 and M7.

But the point is this: manufacturing an aps-c M-mount camera with an optical rangefinder should not necessarily be an ultra-expensive exercise. The technology has existed for years. Epson built the RD-1 years before the M8 and sold it for a lot less. Today's technology could produce an excellent aps-c rangefinder for the same price as a mint M8, but with none of its technical issues.

Whether any other company is game enough to step up is another matter.
