Tamron 24-70 f2.8, awful for sports!

Reviewers were speaking about a decent autofocus speed, not far away from the major makers. I'm sorry to report that it's not the case.

First, I was worrying about the autofocus accuracy because many of my wrestling and judo shots weren't exactly in focus. But I tried the autofocus with still objects, and it's dead on. So it's not a problem of focus accuracy, but focus speed.

I thought I had misused the lens, but I got exactly the same results at the next judo contest. The lens was mounted on a Nikon D600, Autofocus was on AF continuous, Automatic zone, Exposure was manual F3.2 1/500s. I'm supposed to have tack sharp photos with those settings, but Autofocus most of the time misses the spot (by a little, not by that much).

I'm used to using my trusty Nikon 70-300 VR, and focus is dead on, but sometimes I can get closer and need wider range.

Tamron 24-70 is not that universal lens I dreamt of. I'm regretting my choice over the Nikon 24-70, which is better at 70, has less flare and is reported to have exceptional autofocus operation. What are the alternatives? Is Nikon 24-120 f4 autofocus as good as their 70-300VR? Is there another alternative? Could there be a firmware update that improves the autofocus speed?

owning a Nikon D600 with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC, and a bunch of Nikon primes, a Nikon J1 and a Nikon P7700 but not particularly a Nikon fanboy, since I have an Olympus E-PL5 and a Canon S110 too!
