Prints vs screen on wall

I went to the British Columbia Museum's display on "photographers of the year", and it seemed as though all of the photographs were not actually prints, but simply displayed on really thin (lcd?) screens.

This got me thinking about my own house - I have a lot of my own photos that I'd like to display, but not enough wall space.

What is the thinking on putting up a few (possibly framed) displays & using them to show photos instead of prints?

Not like your typical 8x10 consumer "digital photo frame", but something a bit larger, and nicer.

Any recommendations or thoughts?
